The new shopping centre of Waddinxveen opened its doors at the end of 2014. As part of this development ten special private houses have been realised behind a large building block designed by our studio. These houses are a logical transition between the shopping centre and the small-scale neighbourhood on the opposite side of the street. The ten houses are situated along an existing canal and can be reached by small pedestrian bridges.

The ground floor of each of the houses exist of private garages. They are accessed from the large communal parking garage under the building block. The canal houses have three terraces at different levels. The living room and kitchen are situated on the first floor and have an exceptional ceiling height of 3.40 m. The other floors contain a total of four sleeping rooms.

The roof shape and the architectural composition of the canal houses refer to rural architectural traditions. At the same time, modern details have been applied throughout. The roofs are equipped with sharp edges and flat roof tiles. All gutters and rainwater pipes have been carefully integrated. The tight and solid character of the houses is strengthened by deep window recesses and vertical brick lintels above the windows.
