'Potentiaal', the current building for the faculty of Electrical Engineering on the campus of Eindhoven University of Technology, will be transformed into a multi-purpose building providing students accommodation, offices, educational facilities and a cultural centre.

Starting point for the entry for the architectural competition was the preservation of the existing cohesion between various campus buildings, the façades of which have comparable horizontalising characteristics. In line with this feature, the renewed 'Potentiaal' building conveys two identities: during the day the new outer skin of the double façade refers to the horizontal bands of the original curtain-wall façade. The inner, second skin, on the other hand, is geared to the specific program of requirements and determines the spectacular appearance of the renewed building during the night. The natural climate conditions of the space between the inner and outer skins are used for ventilation and heating purposes, and for a substantial decrease in energy demands of the building.

The renewed building can accommodate between 350 and 400 students. The cultural centre and the restaurant are realised on three new floors, placed on top of the existing structure. These spaces allow for unique views across Eindhoven.
