Landscape design
The municipality of Lelystad organized a design competition for a residential building in De Veste neighbourhood containing affordable and sustainable apartments for people aged 55 years or older. Important requirements included a maximum price for each apartment, a logical integration in the existing urban fabric and the realization of a fully integrated car park.
The design has a lively and open appearance all around. The front facade, featuring the distinctive white steel structure and the striking tall entrance, is oriented towards De Veste neighbourhood. With the creation of a indoor parking garage all parking spaces have been kept out of sight. Special attention was given to a carefully designed transition between the public domain and the new building. Thanks to the raised terraces on the ground floor residents can easily look over the pavement and parked cars while limiting the view into their apartments to a minimum.
The spacious courtyard is the communal heart of the building. All 48 apartments are accessed via the courtyard and the galleries. The layout of this collective space encourages residents to meet each other. The planting in the courtyard and around the new building is highly diverse and was chosen by Loohorst Landscape to create a natural habitat for numerous insects and birds.
